Together for a new beginning !
19/05/2024Étoudi and its surroundings is in Yaoundé the largest Muslim quarter after briqueterie.
The largest slaughter house in Yaoundé, located in étoudi, attracted Muslim shepherds from Northern Cameroon who came to Yaoundé to sell their cattle. Thirty years ago, the first seller of (Muslim) cattle settled in étoudi.
Today, thousands of Muslims have settled there with their families to the point where the community has since expanded to the other neighbourhood around étoudi where the beef market and slaughter house is located.
Étoudi has 3 relatively large mosques and more than 10 small ones.
The construction of several étoudi mosques was sponsored by El-Hajj Nana Bouba who is one of the biggest rich Muslims in the neighbourhood.
Life among étoudi Muslims is governed by Islamic law: The iman is not only a spiritual guide but also settles conflicts and celebrates marriages.
Muslims who don’t have livestock to sell are involved in small businesses. They don’t associate with non-Muslims living around them. They extend their rights-of-way in the area by buying the land and houses of non-Muslims who decide to sell.
At one time, we witnessed a massive adhesion of young people in the neighbourhood to Islam driven by the lure of gain.
There is no intentional plan to reach the Muslims of étoudi and surrounding areas who are still unreached. To our knowledge, there are no Christians doing strategic work among them. Many of them have not yet had the opportunity to hear the gospel because no one has come to them to tell them about Jesus Christ.
Prayer topics
▶ Let us pray that the Lord raises up people with a burden for Muslims in the area of étoudi, Manguier, Ngousso, Tsinga village…
▶ Let us pray for El-Hadj Nana Bouba as well as for other influential leaders in the community. May the Lord reveal himself to them.
▶ Let us pray for the land dispute between a missionary and Muslims who improperly occupy his plot of land in the area. Beyond a simple land dispute, there is a spiritual issue that is ongoing.
▶ Let us pray that the Lord will provide the means needed to build something on this site to reach Muslims in the area.
